Shelly Miscavige

01/08/2007

On August 1st, 2007, Michelle Miscviage, a 46-year-old scientologist, went missing. Despite extensive investigations, law enforcement has been unable to find any clues as to her whereabouts. The case has remained unsolved for 17 years, leaving people in a state of uncertainty and curiosity.

Type of Crime: Disappearance

Location: California, US

Victim: Shelly Miscavige (Michele Diane Barnett, January 18, 1961)

What happened?

Shelly Miscavige is an American scientologist. She's infamously married to the leader of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige. For years, Shelly was David's right-hand woman – she was his wife, his assistant, the first lady of Scientology and she even acted as a handler to many of Scientology's more famous members.

Shelly had missed the wedding of Tom Cruise, a famous Hollywood actor and a profound member of the church. David acted as the best man and it was unusual for Shelly to not be glued to her husband's side. This caused concerns about Shelly's well-being among her friends. Leah Remini, a former Scientologist was one of the first to raise questions about Shelly's absence. Her attempts to find out about Shelly's absence were shot down and seen as disrespectful.

Shelly was last seen in public at her father's funeral in 2007. The church insisted Shelly was just a private person and avoided the spotlight at all costs. Remini kept asking questions about Shelly and was constantly shot down with rude and condescending comments by the members of the church as well as David.

Remini ended up leaving the church in 2013, but not before filing a missing persons report about Shelly. The law enforcement assured Shelly was "alive and well" despite Remini pressing on. The officers had acted somewhat suspiciously and danced around the topic.

Nobody has shared any details about Shelly's whereabouts, raising the question, Where is Shelly Miscavige?

David Miscavige's father, Ron Miscavige, who had departed the church in 2012, said he had no idea where his daughter-in-law was.

"Shelly, she'll never be free. These are pretty bad people, but they don't have a conscience and that lets them do it."

Theories & suspects

Hostage

In 2016, an anonymous source claimed to have spotted Shelly twice in Crestline, California near the Scientology headquarters. They said she was being "escorted by two men," and described her physical appearance as a thin woman who looked dishevelled, almost as if she were a drug addict, or like she was homeless.

This boosts the theory of Shelly being held hostage at the Scientology headquarters. Other variation of this theory suggests Shelly was in too deep in Scientology and chose to stay at the church.

Dead

Many people believe David might've killed Shelly over a disagreement. He however is still married to Shelly and there has not been a body or remains found.

Other

Scientology in a nutshell

The Church of Scientology is a controversial religious organization founded by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950s. Scientology teaches that individuals are immortal beings who have lived many past lives and that the process of "auditing" can help individuals address mental and emotional problems and improve their lives. The church has faced numerous accusations of abuse and exploitation and is considered a cult by some.

The Church of Scientology has not commented on Shelly's location and regularly hides replies on their X account of people asking about her.

Shelly's pictures

I can't, unfortunately, post any pictures of Shelly, since they are heavily licensed and protected. If you click here, it'll direct you to the Google search where you can find a few photos. She is the woman with curly red hair.

David Miscavige's brief disappearance

Shelly's husband David also went missing for some months. The New York Post reported in January 2023 that lawyers had tried to reach him concerning a child trafficking lawsuit but were unable to contact him. According to the plaintiffs' lawyers, they tried 27 times over four months to serve Miscavige the legal papers.

In April 2023, David was ultimately seen at an event for founder L. Ron Hubbard, where he reportedly gave a speech lasting three hours.
